Abstract

Beyond Binaries – Toward a "Polylogue" in Arab Culture

This article proposes a radical critique of the traditional binary model of intercultural dialogue, suggesting an epistemological alternative: the "polylogue" or multidimensional dialogue. Starting from the crisis of contemporary dialogues, often limited to mere "discourse on dialogue" without real transformation, the text exposes the limitations of the binary model that reduces cultural complexity to a sterile confrontation between two homogeneous blocks. As an alternative, the author introduces the concept of the polylogue, developed by Austrian philosopher Franz Martin Wimmer, which rests on a plurality of centers, mutual influence, and simultaneous interaction. Applied to the Arab context, this model invites recognizing immense internal diversity and rereading heritage with a plural and critical gaze, focusing on the challenges of the self before those of the other.

ينطلق البحث من تشخيص أزمة الحوارات المعاصرة التي تبقى محصورة في دائرة « الكلام على الحوار » من دون تحقيق تحوّل حقيقيّ في فهم الآخر. يكشف المقال عن محدوديّة النموذج الثنائيّ الذي يختزل التعقيد الثقافيّ في مواجهة بين طرفَيْن متجانسَيْن، ما يُعيد إنتاج الانقسامات بدلًا من بناء التفاهم. كبديل، يقدّم مفهوم البوليلوغ الذي طوّره الفيلسوف النمساويّ فرانز مارتن فيمر، والذي يقوم على تعدُّديَّة المراكز والتأثير المتبادل والتفاعل المتزامن. في السياق العربيّ، يدعو المقال إلى الاعتراف بالتنوّع الداخليّ وإعادة قراءة التراث بمنظور تعدُّديّ نقديّ، مع التركيز على مواجهة تحدّيات الذات قبل الآخر.
