Abstract
The number of Armenians in Lebanon exceeded one hundred thousand inhabitants before 1975, the date of the start of the civil war. Currently, the Armenian community of Lebanon is endangered, particularly due to its language and the current demographic decline. In 2010, UNESCO included Western Armenian on the list of endangered languages. The same year, filmmaker Vatché Boulghourjian directed a fiction film in Western Armenian, The Fifth Column. The film has a significant cinematic language both by its content and its form. The usage of the Western Armenian language by the characters within the film reframes the plot in a context of post-memory and transgenerational trauma.
Résumé
Les Arméniens du Liban dépassaient les cent mille habitants avant 1975, date du début des conflits armés. La communauté arménienne du Liban se retrouve en danger de disparition, notamment par sa langue et le déclin démographique actuel. En 2010, l’UNESCO a répertorié l’arménien occidental sur la liste des langues en danger. La même année, le cinéaste Vatché Boulghourjian tente une aventure linguistique en tournant La cinquième colonne, une fiction en arménien occidental. Le résultat est significatif, pas uniquement dans le contexte de la micro-histoire des événements, mais aussi dans l’éloquence cinématographique d’une langue qui se veut souvent une langue littéraire, surtout dans le paysage audiovisuel arabe du Proche-Orient.
