Abstract

By adapting Sonallah Ibrahim’s Zaat, the eponymous TV show deeply transforms the original novel, unfolding new meanings for the viewer in the context of post-revolutionary Egypt.
Through a comparative analysis of the novel and the TV show, this study intends to understand how the show offers a portrait of Egyptian society and a portrait of a woman that are inscribed within the renewal of the political gaze Egyptian society develops on herself.
Simultaneously, this gaze questions how gender relations are brought to the screen, and how they are linked to social and national issues.

Résumé

En adaptant le roman de Sonallah Ibrahim Les Années de Zeth, la série télévisée opère un travail de remaniement de l’œuvre originale permettant d’explorer de nouveaux sens dans le contexte de l’Égypte post-révolutionnaire.
À partir de l’analyse comparée du roman et de la série, cette étude vise à saisir comment la série dresse un portrait de la société égyptienne et un portrait de femme qui s’inscrivent dans le renouvellement du regard politique de la société égyptienne sur elle-même, et sur la façon dont les rapports de genre sont portés à l’écran, articulés aux problématiques sociales et nationales.
