Abstract

Starting from the filmed narrative of three characters — Abou Youssef, a homeless person found during the day at the Sanayeh public garden; a security person in charge of a crumbling building in the Grand Hotels’ sector; and Fatmeh, who squats in an abandoned property in the same sector — this article introduces us into the heartland of Beirut through the eyes of tramps and vagabonds. It is made up of narratives and counter-narratives built on elements of reality but that, in fact, speak of another dimension of reality where truth is no longer an issue. The stories are set in spaces linked to the city of Beirut and its extensions, through narrative maps drawn from the stories told by the characters themselves, but also from related rumors and a series of follow-ups and superposed versions. Behind the camera are Pascale Féghali, a visual anthropologist, and Paola Yacoub, an artist, architect, and archaeologist, who, in the framework of their research in the city, question the divide between reality and imagination. They turn to real characters constantly reinventing themselves and, in the process, recreating reality itself in the narratives.

À partir des récits de trois personnages filmés – Abou Youssef, un sans-abri qui occupe le jardin public de Sanayeh ; le garde de sécurité d’un immeuble en ruines dans le quartier des grands hôtels ; et Fatmé, sortie d’un terrain vague de ce même secteur –, cet article nous introduit au cœur d’un Beyrouth vagabond, fait d’histoires et de contre-histoires, se nourrissant du réel pour mieux s’en détacher et où la vérité ne représente plus un enjeu. Des cartographies narratives tirées des récits des personnages, auxquelles viennent se greffer des rumeurs ainsi que des versions superposées, permettent d’ancrer les histoires dans des espaces et de les rattacher à la ville de Beyrouth et à ses extensions. Derrière ces portraits se trouvent une anthropologue-cinéaste, Pascale Féghali, et une artiste, architecte et archéologue, Paola Yacoub, qui, par leurs recherches et leurs pérégrinations en ville, questionnent, à travers des personnages non inventés mais qui se réinventent par leurs récits, le rapport entre réel et imaginaire.
