Abstract

By relying on the works of two Palestinian directors – one being a found-footage documentary and the other an experimental piece – this article examines the importance of archives in the elaboration of Palestinian visual memory. Through its complex cinematographic history and the “missing image / ‘invisibled’ image,” Palestinian creators today use the medium of film to bear witness to their presence. The author aims to think through the use of archives in this struggle against invisibility and toward the recognition of a history, a culture, and a memory that are constantly threatened by erasure. At the border between historical proof and a source of aesthetic inspiration, the archive makes the link between image and memory, so as to question the present with the help of the traces of the past.

Résumé

En s’appuyant sur le travail de deux réalisateurs palestiniens – un documentaire de found footage et un essai expérimental – cet article questionne l’importance des archives dans l’élaboration d’une mémoire visuelle palestinienne. De par son histoire cinématographique complexe et son « image manquante / invisibilisée », les créateurs palestiniens emploient aujourd’hui le médium du cinéma pour attester de leur présence. L’auteure entend réfléchir à l’utilisation de l’archive dans la lutte contre l’invisibilité et pour la reconnaissance d’une histoire, d’une culture et d’une mémoire qui sont sans cesse menacées d’effacement. À la lisière entre preuve historique et source d’inspiration esthétique, l’archive fait le lien entre l’image et la mémoire afin d’interroger le présent à l’aide des traces du passé.
