Proche-Orient, Études juridiques

About This Journal

The editorial line of the journal continues to reflect the orientation set forth by the advisory committee in the inaugural issue of 1967: “to study together, from a positive, critical, and, as far as possible, sociological perspective, the laws of the countries of the Near East”. Within this framework, Lebanese law naturally holds a central place. Yet, as in the past, the journal remains open to contributions on the legal systems of the wider region, particularly those of the Arab countries along the Mediterranean.
Today, the scientific committee includes several foreign correspondents who enrich the journal by presenting developments in positive law from their respective countries, in either Arabic or French. This bilingualism - an ambition of the founders from the outset - aims to foster dialogue between jurists of the Near East and those working within continental legal traditions. Contributions in English are also welcomed, provided they engage with the laws of the region. In this way, Proche-Orient, Etudes Juridiques extends the mission of the Faculty of Law at Saint Joseph University of Beirut: to privilege comparative approaches that deepen understanding of legal systems on both shores of the Mediterranean.
