Abstract
Background : Bacillus coagulans (B. coagulans) is a probiotic commonly used for broad spectrum of systemic infections, its potential to treat oral infections, particularly periodontitis, is still being studied. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of probiotic B. coagulans as an adjunct to SRP in periodontitis patients.
Material and Methods: Thirty systemically healthy patients with stage I/ stage II and grade A/ grade B periodontitis were selected and randomly divided into two groups. The control group received SRP along with placebo and the test group received SRP + B. coagulans probiotic chewable tablets. At baseline, one month, and three months after treatment, the clinical and microbiological evaluations were conducted in both groups. Microbiological analysis was carried out using real time PCR to evaluate Porphyromonas gingivalis and Bacillus coagulans levels in test and control group.
Results: Intergroup analysis revealed that the test group outperformed the placebo group statistically significantly in terms of clinical and microbiological parameters at all evaluation time points.
Conclusion: The study's findings imply that probiotic B. coagulans supplementation as an adjuvant to SRP enhances the clinical parameters and reduces the periodontopathogen load in patients with periodontal disease, which is safer and more sustainable treatment option.
