Abstract

Today’s study traces the course of the French language and the role it played during colonization in Senegal. It is a mission that it accomplished well and which allowed it to be chosen as the official language of independent Senegal in 1960. The article looks back on the use of French from mutual education to the accession of the country to independence, passing through the secular school and the school of the hostages of Faidherbe, as well as the major reorganization of teaching in 1903 in the AOF. Then, the impact of the exclusive use of French in colonial education when choosing an official language is highlighted. Furthermore, this study focuses on the motivations for choosing the French language as an official language to the detriment of national languages.

Résumé
La présente étude retrace le parcours de la langue française et le rôle qu’elle a joué durant la colonisation au Sénégal. C’est une mission qu’elle a bien accomplie et qui lui a valu le choix comme langue officielle du Sénégal indépendant en 1960. L’article revient sur l’utilisation du français depuis l’enseignement mutuel jusqu’à l’accession du pays à l’indépendance, en passant par l’école laïque et l’école des otages de Faidherbe, ainsi que la grande réorganisation de l’enseignement en 1903 dans l’AOF. Ensuite, est mis en lumière l’impact de l’utilisation exclusive du français dans l’enseignement colonial lors du choix d’une langue officielle. Par ailleurs, cette étude s’intéresse aux motivations du choix de la langue française comme langue officielle au détriment des langues nationales.
