Abstract

In this article, Edoardo Sanguineti’s translation of Molière’s Dom Juan serves as a case study for a reflection on the transformative action of translation, based on the interaction of three categories: hermeneutics, temporality and orality. More precisely, the translator’s interpretative horizon – here, specifically, his vision of theatre, translation and the classic – is presented as the source of a transformative handling of orality in translation. Sanguineti’s translative orality is described as disrupted and alienating. Paratext reveals the following influencing factors: a militant function attributed to language, a performative conception of scenic language, a theoretical approach to translation based on transformative agency and the perception of the classic as a work of the past which cannot be universally understood and should therefore be kept at distance.

Résumé
Dans cet article, nous étudions la traduction de Dom Juan de Molière réalisée par Edoardo Sanguineti en tant que cas d’étude de l’action transformative de la traduction, reposant sur l’interaction de trois catégories : l’herméneutique, la temporalité et l’oralité. Nous souhaitons montrer comment l’horizon interprétatif du traducteur – en l’occurrence, sa vision du théâtre, du classique et de la traduction – agit en manière transformative sur l’oralité et mettons en exergue une oralité cible marquée par la brisure et l’étrangéité. Recherchant l’origine de ces choix dans le paratexte, nous identifions les facteurs suivants : une fonction militante de la langue et une vision performative de la parole scénique ; une manipulation revendiquée de la traduction ; une volonté de mise à distance du classique en tant qu’œuvre du passé dont le sens ne saurait être universellement saisi.
