Abstract

The notion of empathy, so often used today in social psychology, has sparked an increasing interest in recent years among researchers in the field of translation studies. In this article, we will first examine the main historical antecedents of the concept of empathy and study how it manifests itself in translation in general and in subtitling in particular. We will then analyze how empathy, emotional intelligence, culture and translation are related as well as the fundamental role translators play in the translating process. Finally, we will investigate empathy and the translation of nonverbal cues in films.

Résumé
La notion d’empathie, si souvent utilisée aujourd’hui en psychologie sociale, a suscité un intérêt croissant ces dernières années chez les chercheurs en traductologie. Dans cet article, nous examinerons tout d’abord les principaux antécédents historiques du concept d’empathie et étudierons comment elle se manifeste dans la traduction en général et dans le sous-titrage en particulier. Nous analyserons ensuite la relation entre empathie, intelligence émotionnelle, culture et traduction ainsi que le rôle fondamental du traducteur dans l’opération traduisante. Enfin, nous étudierons de près l’empathie et la traduction des éléments non verbaux dans les films.
