Abstract

Published in France by Casterman in 2015, Le piano oriental is the fifth graphic novel by French Lebanese comic artist Zeina Abirached. Like her previous graphic works, this book is part of the autobiographical comics movement, although it takes a slightly different perspective. The author is no longer dealing with the facts of collective history, recounting the Beirut of her childhood ravaged by civil war, but she explores her linguistic biography, reflecting on her bilingualism and her dual heritage. Combining images and words, Le piano oriental retraces the author’s linguistic journey and the experience of a mother tongue that is not always pacified, culminating in the conquest of a linguistic in-between. After giving an overview of the textual manifestations of bilingualism in the book, this article aims to carry out an analysis of the representations of the author’s/narrator’s linguistic universe. The aim is to highlight the potential of the graphic metaphors inviting us to think about the mother tongue in a “post-monolingual” perspective.

Résumé

Publié en France chez Casterman en 2015, Le piano oriental est le cinquième roman graphique de la bédéiste franco-libanaise Zeina Abirached. Dans la continuité de ses œuvres graphiques précédentes, cet album s’inscrit dans le courant de la bande dessinée autobiographique, même s’il emprunte une voie légèrement différente. L’autrice ne se mesure plus ici aux faits de la grande histoire collective – racontant le Beyrouth de son enfance ravagé par la guerre civile – mais se confronte à sa biographie linguistique, développant une réflexion sur son bilinguisme et sur son double héritage. Associant image et parole, Le piano oriental retrace le parcours linguistique de l’autrice et l’expérience d’une langue maternelle pas toujours pacifiée et en équilibre, culminant dans la conquête d’un entre-deux linguistique.
Après avoir dressé un aperçu des manifestations textuelles du bilinguisme dans l’album, la contribution analyse les représentations de l’univers linguistique de l’autrice-narratrice pour souligner le potentiel déployé par les métaphores graphiques, qui nous invitent à penser la langue maternelle dans un horizon « post-monolingue ».
