The Diaconate of Women: Investigation into Vatican Studies

Abstract

This article traces the evolution of the debate on the ordination of women to the diaconate in the Catholic Church, from the initial discussions at the bishops’ synod in the early 1970s to the recent statements by Pope Francis. It analyzes the various studies conducted by the International Theological Commission and the pontifical commissions, as well as the discussions during the global Synod on Synodality.
The author presents the historical, liturgical, and theological arguments put forward for and against the restoration of the female diaconate, drawing on examples from the early Church and the evolution of practices up to the present day. The article highlights the complexity of the issue, the diversity of positions within the Church, and concludes with Pope Francis’s negative response in May 2024, while emphasizing that the debate remains open. Le diaconat des femmes : Enquête sur les études vaticanes

Résumé
Cet article retrace l’évolution du débat sur l’ordination des femmes au diaconat dans l’Église catholique, depuis les premières discussions lors du synode des évêques au début des années 1970 jusqu’aux récentes prises de position du pape François. Il analyse les différentes études menées par la Commission théologique internationale et les commissions pontificales, ainsi que les discussions lors du Synode mondial sur la synodalité. L’auteur présente les arguments historiques, liturgiques et théologiques avancés pour et contre la restauration du diaconat féminin, en s’appuyant sur des exemples de l’Église primitive et sur l’évolution des pratiques jusqu’à nos jours. L’article met en lumière la complexité du sujet, la diversité des positions au sein de l’Église, et conclut sur la réponse négative du pape François en mai 2024, tout en soulignant que le débat reste ouvert. Ce résumé reflète les principaux points abordés dans l’article et permet d’en saisir l’essentiel.
