The “Kairós” of the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325). A Symbol in the Light of Trinitarian Reciprocity

Abstract

This article examines the relevance of the Council of Nicaea (325) and its Creed in addressing contemporary crises. The author argues that “Trinitarian reciprocity” is essential for understanding God, the nature of Christ, and the mission of the Church. The Council provided an “agapic lexicon,” rooted in Revelation, which shapes Christian thought and practice by presenting divine life as a communion of love, revealed in Christ and communicated by the Holy Spirit. This perspective, describing Christ as “Light from Light,” is proposed as a “healing salve” for contemporary blindness, especially regarding ecological, economic, and social challenges. The author calls for a renewed appropriation of this Nicene heritage to inspire a renewed human understanding and the Church’s engagement in the world, particularly through mystagogical initiation (Baptism and Eucharist), in order to promote justice, peace, and dialogue.

Le « kairós » du Concile œcuménique de Nicée (325). Un Symbole à la lumière de la réciprocité trinitaire

Résumé
Cet article examine la pertinence du Concile de Nicée (325) et de son Symbole face aux crises actuelles. Selon l’auteur, la « réciprocité trinitaire » est essentielle pour comprendre Dieu, le Christ et la mission de l’Église. Le Concile a offert un « lexique agapique », tiré de la Révélation, qui façonne la pensée et la pratique chrétiennes en présentant la vie divine comme une communion d’amour, révélée en Christ et transmise par l’Esprit saint. Cette perspective, où le Christ est « Lumière issue de la Lumière », est proposée comme collyre contre les aveuglements contemporains, notamment écologiques, économiques et sociaux. L’auteur invite à une réappropriation de cet héritage nicéen pour renouveler l’intelligence humaine et l’engagement de l’Église dans le monde, notamment à travers l’initiation mystagogique (Baptême et Eucharistie), afin de promouvoir justice, paix et dialogue.
