The Report "A Synodal Church in Mission": an Orthodox view on its implications for Orthodox-Catholic unity

Abstract

The Synthesis Report of the First Session of the Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (Rome, October 2023) "A Synodal Church on Mission" is extremely interesting for the Orthodox, as it is linked to the issue of primacy, undoubtedly a major obstacle on the path to unity. This very brief presentation offers a reading of the report from an Orthodox perspective.
Since it is difficult to examine such a long text, it focuses only on three issues: a) the participation of lay members in a Synod; b) the meaning of the idea of "all, some, one," and c) the relationship between primacy and synodality. By highlighting the Convergences, Questions to Consider, and Propositions on these three topics, this article attempts to contribute to the Catholic journey with and toward synodality.

Résumé
Le Rapport de Synthèse de la Première Session de l'Assemblée du Synode des Évêques (Rome, octobre 2023), intitulé « Une Église Synodale en Mission », est extrêmement intéressant pour les Orthodoxes, car il est lié à la question de la primauté, sans doute un obstacle important sur le chemin de l'unité. Ce très bref exposé propose une lecture de ce Rapport d'un point de vue orthodoxe. Comme il est difficile d'examiner un texte aussi long, il se concentre uniquement sur trois questions : a) la participation des membres laïcs à un Synode b) la signification de l'idée de « tous, quelques-uns, un » et c) la relation entre la primauté et la synodalité. En soulignant les Convergences, les Questions à considérer et les Propositions sur ces trois sujets, avec et vers la synodalité.
