Introduction – Special witnesses

Abstract

Christian presence is not limited to the publication of texts, nor to theological reflection or the organization of church structures. It is first and foremost a living witness through deep communion and perseverance over years, even decades. For this Jubilee issue, POC pays tribute to three witnesses who have offered their lives to the service of the Church of God in this place, as well as to the living together between Christians and Muslims. The Dominican friar Emilio Platti is well known in Muslim-Christian relations. May Brother Emmanuel Pisani be thanked for the beautiful tribute. The Jesuit Father Nicolas Kluiters devoted himself to the village of Barqa and the region of Hermel-Baalbeck until his martyrdom. On the occasion of the opening of the process of his beatification, Father Thom Sicking gives him a moving testimony that traces the features of his vocation and mission. Sister Barbara, Little Sister of Nazareth, was present for decades, with other Little Sisters, in the city of Hermel. She was a witness of fraternity in the spirit of Nazareth, initiated by Br. Charles de Foucauld who will be canonized on May 1, 2022. This tribute, dedicated to our three privileged witnesses, from Belgium, the Netherlands and Egypt, is very significant. The Christian presence is an evangelical light that illuminates the darkness of the places regardless of nationality, rite and language.

La présence chrétienne ne se limite ni à la publication de textes, ni à la réflexion théologique ou à l’organisation des structures des Églises. Elle est d’abord un témoignage vivant à travers la communion profonde et la persévérance pendant des années, voire des décades. Pour ce numéro jubilaire, POC rend hommage à trois témoins qui ont offert leur vie au service de l’Église de Dieu dans ce lieu, ainsi qu’au vivre-ensemble entre chrétiens et musulmans. Le frère dominicain Emilio Platti est connu dans les relations islamo-chrétiennes. Que le frère Emmanuel Pisani soit remercié pour le bel hommage. Le père jésuite Nicolas Kluiters s’est dévoué pour le village de Barqa et la région du Hermel-Baalbeck jusqu’au martyre. À l’occasion de l’ouverture du procès de sa béatification, le père Thom Sicking lui rend un témoignage émouvant qui retrace les traits de sa vocation et de sa mission. Sœur Barbara, petite sœur de Nazareth, a été présente pendant des décades, avec d’autres petites sœurs, dans la ville du Hermel. Elle a été un témoin de fraternité dans la mouvance de l’esprit de Nazareth, initié par le fr. Charles de Foucauld qui sera canonisé le 1er mai 2022. Cet hommage, consacré à nos trois témoins privilégiés, originaires de Belgique, des Pays-Bas et de l’Égypte, est fort en signification. La présence chrétienne est une lueur évangélique qui illumine l’obscurité des lieux indépendamment de la nationalité, du rite et de la langue.
