Pope Francis and Human Fraternity

Abstract

Pope Francis’ meetings and travels are a powerful moment for the implementation of the Church’s teaching, thought and pontifical plan. It is clear that divine mercy, synodality and human fraternity constitute the core of his pontifical teaching and his plan for the renewal of the Church for a better mission in today’s world. In the foundations of these three pillars of the Pope’s thought, some perceive an attachment to the primordial Gospel message, to the theology of the People of God explained in the second chapter of Lumen Gentium, and to openness to the world, in particular to Islam.
Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has had a special concern for the peoples of the Middle East, a region marked by conflict, suffering and injustice, where religious, cultural and human diversity is both a considerable richness and a source of sometimes-cruel confrontation. The speeches of Pope Francis in Abu Dhabi (2019), Iraq (2021), Cyprus and Greece (2021) will continuously remind of the foundations of human brotherhood in the service of peace and harmony among peoples. Sr. Tidola Abdo presents us with the chronicles of his trips to the Middle East, punctuated by some emblematic speeches and followed by an analysis by Souraya Bechealany, former Secretary General of CEMO, who was present in Abu Dhabi and Bari.


Le pape François et la Fraternité humaine

Résumé
Les rencontres et les voyages du pape François sont un moment fort pour la mise en œuvre de l’enseignement de l’Église, de sa pensée et de son plan pontifical. Il est évident que la miséricorde divine, la synodalité et la fraternité humaine constituent le cœur de son enseignement pontifical et de son plan de renouveau de l’Église pour une meilleure mission dans le monde d’aujourd’hui. Dans les fondements de ces trois piliers de la pensée du Pape, certains perçoivent un attachement au message évangélique primordial, à la théologie du Peuple de Dieu explicitée au deuxième chapitre de Lumen Gentium et à l’ouverture au monde, plus particulièrement à l’islam.
Depuis le début de son pontificat, le pape François a eu une sollicitude particulière pour les peuples du Moyen-Orient, région marquée par les conflits, les souffrances et l’injustice, alors que la diversité religieuse, culturelle et humaine constitue à la fois une richesse considérable et une source de confrontation quelquefois cruelle. Les discours du pape François à Abu Dhabi (2019), en Iraq (2021), à Chypre et en Grèce (2021) sont marqués par le rappel des fondements de la fraternité humaine au service de la paix et de la concorde entre les peuples.
Sr Tidola Abdo nous présente les chroniques de ses voyages au Moyen-Orient, ponctués par quelques discours emblématiques, et suivis d’une analyse par Souraya Bechealany, ancienne Secrétaire Générale du CEMO, qui était présente à Abu Dhabi et à Bari.
