Relire le document de Balamand 1993 : 25 ans après

Abstract

Since the inaugural Session of their Mixed Commission at Patmos-Rhodes (1980) the question of Uniatism was in use among Catholics and Orthodox. The Plenary Meeting in Balamand-Lebanon 1993 handled exclusively this question. It has been taken up again in July 2000 in Emmitsburg-Baltimore (USA) by Pope Francis and Patriarch Cyril of Moscow in their common Declaration which they undersigned during their meeting in Havana (Cuba) on February 12 2016.
This Article is a reflection on the actuality as well as the future of this problematic in as far as this Balamand document and the application of its principles is in use in church sociology as well as in practice, by both, the Roman Catholic Church as well as the Orthodox Church. This Document has not given any definitive answer to the many questions brought up by Uniatism.

Résumé
Pourquoi relire, vingt-cinq ans plus tard, le document que la Commission mixte internationale pour le dialogue théologique, entre l’Église catholique et l’Église orthodoxe, a adopté à sa réunion plénière au monastère de Balamand, en juin 1993, sous le titre « L’uniatisme, méthode d’union du passé, et la recherche actuelle de la pleine communion » ? Ce document est-il toujours d’actualité ? Constitue-t-il un tournant dans les relations entre catholiques et orthodoxes ? Quelles ont été sa réception et son application, tant dans l’Église catholique que dans l’Église orthodoxe ? Si les réponses à ces questions sont sans aucun doute très différentes selon les interlocuteurs, tous seront d’accord pour reconnaître que Balamand n’a pas apporté de réponse définitive aux nombreuses questions, soulevées par ce qu’on entend habituellement par « uniatisme ».
