Synodality and Primacy in the First Millennium: Toward a Common Understanding in the Service of the Unity of the Church

Abstract

1. Ecclesial communion arises directly from the incarnation of the eternal Word of God, according to the good pleasure (eudokía) of the Father, through the Holy Spirit. Christ, who came to earth, founded the Church as his Body (cf. 1 Corinthians 12:12–27). The unity that binds the persons of the Trinity to one another is reflected in the communion (koinonía) of the members of the Church among themselves. Thus, as Saint Maximus the Confessor affirms, the Church is an eikōn of the Most Holy Trinity. At the Last Supper, Jesus Christ prayed to the Father: “Holy Father, keep them united in your name, the name you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one” (John 17:11). This Trinitarian unity is manifested in the Holy Eucharist, where the Church prays to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit.

1. La communion ecclésiale naît directement de l’incarnation du Verbe éternel de Dieu, selon la bienveillance (eudokía) du Père, par le Saint-Esprit. Le Christ, venu sur terre, a fondé l’Église comme son corps (cf. 1 Corinthiens 12, 12-27). L’unité qui lie les personnes de la Trinité entre elles se reflète dans la communion (koinonía) des membres de l’Église entre eux. Ainsi, comme l’affirme saint Maxime le Confesseur, l’Église est une éikon de la très Sainte Trinité. Pendant la Cène, Jésus-Christ a prié le Père : « Père saint, garde-les unis dans ton nom, le nom que tu m’as donné, pour qu’ils soient un, comme nous-mêmes » (Jean 17, 11). Cette unité trinitaire se manifeste dans la sainte eucharistie, là où l’Église prie Dieu le Père par Jésus-Christ dans l’Esprit Saint.
