The Foundation of the Trinity in Barth's Thought

Abstract

In the last part of his Dogmatic, Karl Barth develops a new theological method to reflect on the Doctrine of Trinity. His reasoning is predicated on the history of Jesus of Nazareth as narrated in the Gospels and then on the refusal of all speculative and philosophical discourse about God. It thus provides the Trinitarian language the possibility to take into consideration the passibility of God without denying its immutability. This leads to new theological elaborations concerning the relations between the three figures of the Trinity. Consequently, it offers a promising future for one of the most important and ancient doctrines of Christianity, and indirectly brings us closer to Eastern theological thought mainly on three points. First, the categorical refusal to use philosophy to express each and every discourse on God's being. Second, the primary importance of resurrection in the theological discourse. And, finally, the use of the notion of perichoresis to better summarize intra-trinitarian relations.


Le fondement de la Trinité dans la pensée barthienne

Résumé
Malgré les nombreuses et importantes différences qui séparent la pensée théologique orientale de celle de Karl Barth, un certain nombre d'idées les rapprochent. Un des points saillants de la théologie de Barth est d'avoir situé la doctrine de la Trinité au début de sa monumentale Dogmatique, faisant ainsi d'elle le cœur de sa pensée. Par cet acte, le Suisse devient un des pionniers du renouvellement de la pensée trinitaire au XXe siècle marquant le début d'une nouvelle ère en théologie et rapprochant considérablement l'Occident de l'Orient. Cet intérêt pour la Trinité continue à se manifester jusque dans les derniers volumes de la Dogmatique dans lesquels nous retrouvons une importante construction christologico-théologique autour de la relation du Père à son Fils qui, vraisemblablement, révèle un sommet dans le développement de la pensée de Barth mais aussi dans l'évolution de la théologie en général. Nous allons tenter d'élucider, succinctement, le fondement sur lequel Barth élabore cette pensée trinitaire.
