Abstract

The phenomenological approach of the invisible and the visible in the icon shows the dialectic of the divine and the human which defines its theophoric character. The article explores the modalities of the donation of the invisible through the experience of the gaze that opens the Presence and is nothing but the contemplation of the heart and the expression of its desire of God.

Résumé

Dans le Troisième Discours contre ceux qui rejettent les saintes icônes, saint Jean Damascène écrit: « Toute icône révèle et montre quelque chose que l'on ne peut pas voir ». L'assertion évoque une chose invisible mais paradoxalement donnée à voir qu'il importe de nommer pour faire sens et suscite, à cet effet, un double questionnement sur l'essence de la monstration et sur les modalités du voir. Le questionnement toutefois prend appui sur l'entente préalable des fondements théologiques de l'écriture icônique que sont l'Incarnation, la Transfiguration et l'Eucharistie.
