The Challenges of a Common Catechesis in the Middle East

Abstract

The Council of the Catholic Patriarchs in the Middle East (CPCO), launched together with the Syriac and Greek orthodox Patriarchs of Antioch in 1996 the ecumenical project of a common catechesis in Lebanon. The author relates in his article the genesis, the vicissitudes and the stakes of this project. He also shows its theological and ecclesiological foundations before précising the challenges and the perspectives of the future. Notwithstanding the ecumenical and catechetical interest the project offers, it is until now far from meeting a unanimous reception of the different Churches or of the educational establishments. However it can constitute a promising model for the service of the new evangelization and the Christian presence in this region of the world.


Les défis d'une catéchèse commune au Moyen-Orient

Résumé

Dans les années 60, le besoin d'une catéchèse commune au Moyen-Orient s'est fait sentir et d'aucuns souhaitaient voir ce projet exprimer la foi et l'héritage patristique, liturgique et spirituel des Églises orientales. Il constituait, en quelque sorte, une condition déterminante pour l'avenir de leur mission. Le P. Jean Corbon écrivait à ce sujet : « Quand nous disons que la situation est grave et urgente, c' est qu'il y va de la mission première des Églises – évangéliser les baptisés – et de l'avenir même de l'Église ». Ce projet peut être également considéré comme l'un des fruits inéluctables des progrès œcuméniques réalisés depuis le deuxième concile du Vatican surtout que l'appel insistant des pontifes romains, Paul VI, Jean-Paul II et Benoît VI à la nouvelle Évangélisation ne fait que confirmer le besoin de coordonner l'œuvre catéchétique dans un même lieu.
